Increasingly, government agencies are deploying mission critical applications in remote locations. Downtime, even for scheduled maintenance and upgrades, can be debilitating. Stratus’ recent white paper Ensure the Availability of Critical IT Solutions in Remote Government Locations outlines the challenges.

While IT systems in government data centers are administered and maintained by an experienced IT staff 24/7, systems in remote locations lack such dedicated support. Operational simplicity, remote support capabilities and ease of maintenance and repair are critically important for achieving continuous availability in remote environments — and provide the added benefit of reducing overall costs.

What are your views? What steps are you taking to ensure the availability of your mission critical applications in remote locations?

This is an excellent whitepaper.
Once the total cost of ownership is explained and the reduction in footprint and maintenance is realized it is hard to argue for a clustered solution. Many federal agencies are beginning to realize this.
